REPORTED SPEECH

Reported speech is used if we want to repeat the speech.

Kinds of Reported Speech
1. Positive or Negative Statement

2. Yes / No Questions

3. WH – Questions

4. Positive or Negative Request
For Example :

Positive or Negative Statements

1. Misriyanto said,”I’m going to quit my job”
2. Misriyanto said,”I can’t come to the party”
3. Misriyanto said,”Tina has bought a new car”
4. Misriyanto said ,”My friends are not very well”

1. Misriyanto said ( that ) he was going to quit his job.

2. Misriyanto said (that ) he couldn’t come to the party.

3. Misriyanto said ( that ) Tina had bought a new car.

4. Misriyanto said ( that ) his friends were not very well.

Notes :
1. You can use or leave “that” in positive or negative statement. 2. There is Changing of Tense. 3. The simple past can usually stay the same in reported speech.
Tom said:,” I woke up feeling sick so I stayed in bed.”
Tom said ( that ) he woke ( or had woken ) up feeling sick and so he stayed
( or had stayed ) in bed.

For Example : Yes / No Questions

Direct Speech
1  Nanik asked :,”Are you a teacher ?”
2. Nanik asked:,” Did you go to the party ?”
3. Nanik asked :,”Have you visited Bali?”
4. Nanik asked: , ” Can you speak English?”

Reported Speech/Indirect Speech

1, She asked him whether he was a teacher.
2. She asked him whether he had gone to the party.
3. She asked him if he had visited Bali.
4. She asked him if he could speak English.

For Example : Wh … Questions

Direct Speech
1. She asked him,”Where is Yanti ?”

2. She asked him ,”Where did you go yesterday ?”

3. She asked him,”Why have you been absent 3 times ?”

4. She asked him,”How many times have you visited Bali?”

Reported speech / Indirect speech

1. She asked him where Yanti was.

2. She asked him where he had gone the day before.

3. She asked him why he had been absent 3 times.

4. She asked him how many times he had visited Bali.

For Example : Positive or Negative Requests

Direct Speech

1. Close the door quickly!
2. Don’t drive your car fast!
3. Listen to me!
4. Kiss me!

Reported Speech

1. She asked him to close the door quickly.
2. She asked him not to drive his car fast.
3. She asked him to listen to her.
4. She asked him to kiss her.

1. She ordered him to close the door quickly.
2. She ordered him not to drive his car fast.
3. She ordered him to listen to her.
4. She ordered him to kiss her.
